A surface coating comprises hard metal grains in a binder metal matrix. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a granular mixture containing hard metal grains and binder metal particles for plasma coating; and (ii) a surface coating process comprising application of hard metal grains and a binder by plasma coating. Preferred Features: The binder metal comprises } 14 vol.% total (less than 7 vol.% each) of brass and cobalt. The hard metal grains comprise sintered, especially recycled hard metal.
