Crystals are characterized using a spontaneous non-colinear optical frequency doubler by focussing a laser light source of a certain frequency with known optical polarization on the crystal. The light passing through the crystal is suppressed by a cut-off filter and projected onto a glass screen, the reverse side of which is read by an electronic camera and the ring characteristics calculated. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the crystal characterization process.
