The method involves measuring grey values of the wheel during a measuring operation, lasting a complete revolution. The grey values are evaluated based on the existence of an orderly welding seam (8a,8b), so that the number of orderly welding seams determined after the measuring operation is compared with a stored reference count (S), and used to produce a corresponding signal. An Independent claim is included for a device for implementing the method.
