The instrument has a sensor (50) to detect a given pointer position (10'), e.g. a zero position, and a control device to control the pointer position using a pointer-operating drive, e.g. an electric stepping motor. The pointer is moved from a mechanical rest position (10) into the given position for detection by the sensor, with the obtained control value used for subsequent compensation of the pointer position. An Independent claim is also included for a pointer position compensation method for a pointer display instrument.
