Polymetallic oxides suitable for use as catalysts in the dehydrogenation of propane to propene have a mean pore diameter of between 0.04 and 0.01 micron and a specific surface of at least 20 m2/g. The general formula of the oxides is Ma1Mo1-bMb2Ox. M1 = Co, Ni, Mg, Zn, Mn and/or Cu, M2 is W, V, Te, Nb, P, Cr, Fe, Sb, Ce, Sn and/or La, a is 0.5-1.5, b is 0-0.5. x has the value determined by the valency and oxidation number of the various element and s in the formula.
