Scanner to register orientation of cop from spinning station has facing optical sensors linked to evaluation unit which determines location of cop head and foot
The system to determine the orientation of a cop, holding spun yarn to be carried to a bobbin winder, has an optical scanner (8,9) to monitor the foot (3) and head (4) of the cop (1), and generate scanning signals (a,b). The optical scanners (8,9) are aligned across the longitudinal axis of the cop (1). An evaluation unit (7) processes the scanning signals by comparison with a reference value for the cop orientation. The evaluation unit (7) uses only one reference value for the cop (1) orientation. The value of the scanning signals (a,b) is stored, to form a reference value of sections of the cops (1) with the same sleeve dimensions or diameter, and at least one reference value related to a section is given at the start of each section of the cop (1). At least one scanning signal (a,b) is used as a reference value. The facing optical scanners (8,9) are positioned to scan a different section of the cop (1) in the scanning zone, and the scanning signals (a,b) from the second scanner is the reference value. Each scanner has a light source and a light sensor (8,9), with the foot (3) and/or head (4) of the cop (1) between the light and the sensor. The light sensors (8,9) register the light brightness according to the shadowing of the cop foot and head (3,4), to generate representative scanning signals (a,b). The sensors are line sensors, with a number of sensor elements in each line. The evaluation unit (7), with an evaluation logic circuit, is set so that the sensor signal (b) which shows the most brightness on comparison with the reference value gives the location of the cop head (4), and the signal (a) with the least brightness on the comparison shows the position of the cop foot (3). The optical sensor system has filters to ensure that each sensor (8,9) is only exposed to the light from its light source. The light is delivered by light emitting diodes, giving infra red light beams. The optical sensors (8,9) are mounted to the cop guide (5,6), which has an adjustable limit stop (5) for the cop (1) to be scanned.
