To operate a step motor (18) control, for a sewing machine, the system has a control and an interface. The step motor control has a number of freely programmable function cycles as logical function modules. They are stored in memory, and can be accessed by the interface through the sewing machine control using an instruction sequence as a characteristic number. A microprocessor (11) is at the core of the control system. The programming is through a modulator PC (14) or a control panel (15). The programming language is simple for an intermediate memory (16) to be converted (17) into a data format to be compressed and stored in memory (12).
