A sight-glass is fitted into the wall of the vessel, which, together with a sensor, allows supervision of the liquid level in the sample tube. The sample tube (18) fits inside a vessel (10,12) whose walls are electrically heated. The lid (12) is held on the body (10) by vacuum, possibly assisted by magnets. A seal (16) is provided between them. The vessel is held in stirrups (42) that allow it to be tilted. A motor-driven magnet (30) communicates with a magnet (32) inside the vessel. Magnet (32) forms part of a seat provided with a friction ring (36) on which the sample tube (18) sits. In operation the sample tube is rotated up to about 1000 rpm whilst heated air is blown at (20) onto the liquid surface to mix with the vapor before it is withdrawn by vacuum through pipe (24). A vacuum up to 500 millibar is provided. A full tube would start in an upright position but would then be tilted, and rotated at lower speeds, to spread a large liquid film onto the wall of the container.
