To monitor the quality of spun yarn, at a spinning station, a mobile robot (3) applies a shear test a number of times to the spun yarn (20) on a bobbin (122). The findings are displayed. The shear tests are performed on the spun yarn at the spinning station, during times when the spinning station is down. The shear tests are repeated, to give a statistical validity to the readings. The yarn splicing parameters are established by the shear test results. An Independent claim is included for a spinning machine, with a number of spinning stations, with at least one yarn shear test unit and at least one display for the shear test readings. Preferred Features: The shear test unit has a yarn retainer and a yarn tensioner (7), with the spun yarn (20) laid between them. The yarn retainer is formed by the bobbin winder (12) at the spinning station. The yarn retainer and/or yarn tensioner and/or display can be incorporated into the mobile robot (3).
