The Imperial Smelting (IS) shaft furnace installation (1) incorporates an IS shaft furnace (2) and a blowing installation (3) for introducing a carbon carrier and a powder containing zinc into the furnace. An Independent claim is given for operation of the furnace for zinc production. A finely granulated powder mixture of a carbon carrier and a dust containing zinc is blown into a bottom region of an IS shaft furnace (2). The mean granule size of the carbon carrier lies between 10 and 200 microns , and preferably is about 50 microns . The mean granule size of the dust containing zinc is less than 50 microns , and preferably less than 10 microns .
