4-Alkyl-5-cyano-3-sulfonyl-3H-(1,3)-oxazol-2-ones (I) are new. Also new are corresponding 3-unsubstituted oxazolone intermediates (II). Sulfonyl-oxazolones of formula (I) are new. R1 = alkyl, optionally substituted heterocyclyl, R3-substituted nitrophenyl or NR4R5; R3 = halo, alkyl or phenyl; R4 = H or alkyl; R5 = alkyl or optionally substituted phenyl; R2 = alkyl. Independent claims are included for: (i) the preparation of (I), (ii) new oxazolone intermediates of formula (II); and (iii) the preparation of (II).
