An applicator roller (2) is moved back and forth over surface (1a) in a defined and reproducible manner. Droplets fall under gravity onto spray interception surface (3a) where they are detected as splashes. An applicator roller (2) is led back and forth parallel to the area being coated (1a), the surface delivering paint being in constant contact with it, however, no contact is made with the spray interception surface (3a), which is plane and horizontal. The two surfaces face each other and droplets fall under gravity, to be intercepted at the lower surface (3a), where they are detectable as splashes. The coated surface area is 0.5-2 times that of the interception surface (3a).
