The system has a distance sensor unit (3), an obstruction display unit (8) and a control unit (2) connected to the distance sensor unit for monitoring the area around the vehicle w.r.t. obstructions. A distance warning signal is generated if a certain set of trigger conditions is fulfilled. One required warning signal triggering condition is that the distance to an obstruction is less than a defined minimum distance. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating a parking aid system.
