A discharge lamp(1) suited for operation by dielectrically obstructed discharge has: - a discharge vessel (2); - metallic electrodes (3-6) which are located on the wall (7) of the discharge vessel; and - at least one dielectric layer (62) which covers at least one part of the electrodes and optionally the discharge vessel wall in addition. At least that part of the electrodes which is covered with a dielectric layer is additionally covered directly with a blocking layer (61), i.e., the blocking layer is located between each electrode and dielectric layer. The thickness of the blocking layer is of the order of six microns or more.
