A gear selector (1) has a number of sliding bushes with rockers (2, 3, 4, 5) arranged in-line on an axle. The selector mechanism has a locking shaft (31) which is axially secured, and running parallel to the gear selector shaft (14). The locking shaft is linked to the gear selector shaft so that it rotates with the gear selector shaft as the latter is operated. The locking shaft moves the appropriate rocker (2, 3, 4, 5).
