A casting trough or channel is covered over so that a flowing aluminum alloy in it is not directly exposed to atmospheric air. A gas mixture consisting of nitrogen, chlorine and possibly fluorine is continuously blown through the bottom flow area of the alloy, while aluminum oxide residues emerge on the surface of the alloy.
