A knitting machine selector mechanism causes the needle butt (7) to take up three different positions. The butt (7) can project by two different amounts from the needle bed (1) or be completely recessed in the needle groove (4). An Independent claim is also included for a knitting machine with a cam system to drive the needle butts (7) and a first retaining system (3) to hold the butt in a selected position by magnets (2) plus a second retaining system (8) to hold the butt in a further position by magnets (9).
