Wear resistant boride layers are produced, e.g. on steel or titanium alloy substrates, by gas boriding using volatile boron compounds containing boron-oxygen and/or boron-nitrogen bonds
Wear resistant boride layer production on metallic substrates comprises diffusion from volatile boron compounds containing boron-oxygen and/or boron-nitrogen bonds. Preferred Features: Boriding is carried out at a total pressure of 0.1-10 mbar and a substrate surface temperature of 500-1100 deg C. The starting compound may be excited by plasma assistance, preferably by applying a pulsed d.c. glow discharge between the substrate (cathode) and the treatment chamber wall or gas feed nozzle (anode).
