In situ ground water decontamination process operates without pumps and the associated energy costs

A passive in-situ process cleans contaminated ground water in a zone (2) located between two water-impermeable sub-surface barriers (1). The barriers prevent the flow of ground water through the contaminated zone. One of the barriers has an opening which admits ground water (4), but contains a water-permeable plug of a material which filters or treats the contaminants, rendering them harmless.
