The linear motor has a stator containing at least one coil body with several power coils (1) and a uniform, linear sequence of magnetic salient poles. A reaction part (2) is movable along the stator with at least two salient poles, with sensors that output signals depending on the reaction part position. There is also and a control circuit. A measurement arrangement is connected to the power coils so that the coil inductances can be measured, depending on the position of the reaction part relative to the power coils. This has devices for generating control signals depending on the measured inductances. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating a linear switched reluctance motor.
