The method involves stamping lamella (9) from metal strip with circular central openings, radial armature grooves for accommodating an armature winding and recesses (8) formed from one side before assembly to enable the lamella to be joined together. Shallower impressions (13) are formed adjacent to or concentrically with respect to the recesses and from the same side, resulting in small protrusions (12) on the rear. The lamella are combined to form a packet with air gaps (16) caused by the protrusions, which are mutually offset. When setting the height of the packet the air gaps are reduced to give an overall closely toleranced packet.
