An interchangeable diaphragm (5) is located at the inlet to a rheometer nozzle (2) attached to the front of the extruder (1) and an opening (7) between the extruder screw tip and the diaphragm forms a by-pass. An Independent claim is made for a process for measuring processing properties of rubber compounds using the claimed equipment in which: a) pressure before the diaphragm (5); b) pressure inside the nozzle channel c) material flow rate; d) material temperature before the diaphragm and outlet from the extruder; e) screw speed; and f) motor output and torque are measured and fed to a process computer.
