Ultrathin porous glass membrane production comprises slicing a heat treated silica-rich sodium borosilicate glass block into thin plates, followed by acid and then alkali extraction. An ultrathin porous glass membrane is produced from a block of sodium borosilicate glass, which has greater than 50 weight % SiO2 content and which has been heat treated at 580 - 700 deg C for 10-50 hr., by slicing into - 0.08 mm thick plates, acid extracting to 2-10 nm pore size and then alkali extracting to greater than 10 nm pore size.
