Preparation of tar residues for fixed-bed gasification comprises mixing the residues with dried sewage sludge and compressing the mixture. Preparation of tar residues for fixed-bed gasification, where the tar residues comprise tars, acidic resins or tar oil-like products and optionally components from the chemical or coal beneficiating industries and have a tar content of 20-80%, comprises: (a) mixing the tar residues with dried sewage sludge having a fibrous structure and a water content of less than 20%; and (b) compressing the mixture of 50-120 MPa, preferably in a matrix punching press. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a process stated to be as above in which the sewage sludge is supplemented or replaced by a third component, e.g. xylitol or contaminated dust; and (2) a process stated to be as above in which the tar residues are replaced by other organic-based sludge-like residues, e.g. lacquer sludges.
