Shrouding for a cable splice has an insert round the splice with cut end tongues surrounded by a compound metal/plastics film within an outer heat-shrink cuff
The shrouding round the splice (3), between two electrical or optic fiber cables (1,2), has an initial insert (4) of a stable material wound round it. The ends are cut to form tongues (4a) between the cuts. A cuff (6), of a heat-shrink material, is placed over the insert (4), and shrunk in place. A compound film (5) of metal/plastics is wound round the insert, to cover the tongues. During the heat shrinking of the cuff, the free ends of the tongues are distorted down on to the cables (1,2), forming conical transits. The initial insert is of cardboard, round the splice. The compound film is wound round the splice, with the metal side of the film towards the insert. The insert is fixed in place by an adhesive tape at the center, and an adhesive tape fixes the compound film in position at the center.
