The method involves transferring information via a signal from the equipment itself or from at least one sensor that detects at least one equipment measurement parameter, whereby the signal is evaluated to identify the equipment type. The transferred information is contained in the signal by the time duration (t1-t3) between two adjacent falling or rising edges and the equipment type is determined by evaluating the pulse width (t1-t2) and/or pulse space mark ratio (t2-t3) of the signal.
