Separation determines the relative spacing between a stop (5) and a cutting blade (6) in the material rod longitudinal direction and detects the accurate position of the rear end of the material rod (2) upon entry to a measuring region (7) in front of the cutting blade for calculating the residual length of the material rod and the remaining number of cut lengths, to allow removal of the excess end section (4) together with the front end section (3) of the next material rod.
