In high temperature nitriding of ferrous products with stepped nitriding number, one homogeneous nitrogen austenitic layer is produced at temperature between 600 and 750 deg C and at nitriding number under 0.2 for a duration depending on later use of nitriding object and the nitriding number for a shorter duration depending on later use for subsequent formation of an additional connecting layer is raised to a value above 0.5.
