During milk flow, the permanent vacuum is stopped off or choked in a manifold (20) and the area below the teat (4) is ventilated by atmosphere (via nipple (24)). The annulus (5) is fed with atmosphere or overpressure to set up a pressure gradient between annulus (5) and the teat interior (12). Atmosphere is admitted when choking the vacuum via switch and connecting hose whose inbuilt nonreturn valve prevents return flow to the manifold (20). The connecting hose is twinned with the milk hose (23).
