Feedstock is dried by indirect heating with no entrained gases, in an atmosphere purely comprising steam. Steam produced by evaporation is cooled and the condensate is treated. Preferred Features: High calorific value material for pelletization and energy recovery is selected after drying. This is stripped off, after or during vibratory treatment. Energy is recovered following pelletization. An autothermal heat treatment process is carried out, with no external energy input. This releases heat used for the drying process. Calorific value is controlled by adjustments to stripping, controlled in turn, from the temperature of heat treatment.
