A staircase base separates into adjacent triangles (32-37), having a vertex in a plumb vertical axis (31) with its corner points (25-30) corresponding to those on the staircase base. The axis sides (38,39,44,48,52,55) of the triangles leading to the vertical axis are measured at a preset height for their corner point always remaining plumb vertical. A laser range finder coupled to a theodolite forms a measuring unit fitted on a stand in the stairwell, transmitting a laser beam to trace the vertical axis and the corner points.
