The engine (1) has exhaust gas damping (6) with different geometries that can be changed by changeover elements depending on engine data. The engine can be operated with different cycling methods (e.g. two-stroke, four-stroke, six stroke or twelve stroke) and the different geometries of the damper are matched to the different cycle methods. An Independent claim is also included for a method.
