The device (1) has a control to exert a given alternating load on the sample (2) and at least one sensor (5a) to measure at least one parameter characterizing the alternating load ratio. The control exerts a first load pattern, representative of anticipated actual loads, and a second load pattern, during which data are measured to determine at least one parameter. An Independent claim is included for a method for using the device.
