The paddle has a stiffened core section (42) with a 'softer', abrasion resisting overlay (44) covering the trailing edge and the working face. Paddle mixer having at least one shaft (14) within a trough (10) formed with at least one approximately cylindrical surface (26) and a mixing paddle (18) rotatable about a trough axis (A-A). The paddle tip (28) runs near to the trough wall, at an inclination alpha to the axial trough surface direction (M). The paddle comprises a working face (38), a side face (40), leading edge (32) and a trailing edge (34), has a stiffened core section (42) with a 'softer', abrasion resisting overlay (44) covering the trailing edge and the working face. An Independent claim is also included for a composite paddle construction.
