The machine has a pair of magnets in a yoke leg and carries two magnetic coils (3,4). The first permanent magnet (1) has the full field strength and the second has three-quarters of this value. A soft iron piece (2) is attracted to reduce the field strength to three-quarters, the lower magnet has the full field strength. The iron piece is attracted from the lower magnet to cause a field change and the process is repeated. The upper magnet has full strength, the lower is reduced.
