The method involves an electronic control unit (1) in the vehicle generating a request code that is transmitted to an identification or ID unit (7) carried by the user, which generates and returns a response code. The control unit releases or blocks vehicle functions depending on a comparison of the response with an expected code. An interrogation code for the next ID process is pre-generated in the control unit independently of the ID process and stored in the transmitter or transmitter/receiver unit (3,5) whereby the ID process starts with the communications between the transmitter-receiver unit and the user's ID unit..
