The energy absorbing device is located in an approximate horizontal plane extending directly below the front or rear windscreen of the vehicle. The device is in plate form with at least two wall sections spaced apart in the vertical direction of the vehicle, and consists of an upper and lower shell with recesses facing each other and forming spaces. The two shells are interconnected along the recesses.
