The method involves determining the position of a flying object (1) carrying the required measuring devices for map creation. A defined geographic region on the earth is scanned from the flying object using pulsed laser beams (2). The reflection of the laser beams is measured in the flying object. The height of objects on the earth's surface is determined from the propagation time of the laser beams. An Independent claim is included for an apparatus for creating maps from the air.
