A press ram(2) connected to a drive is installed and movable in a press channel(1), and bodkins(8) are movable through slots on the side wall of the ram. The bodkins each have a recess for drawing up of the tying wire(6) and are located a distance away from their free ends. A wire threading unit is located beneath the press channel for the placing of the tying wire into the recess in the bodkin. The wire threading unit has a number of wire threading fingers corresponding to the number of bodkins.
