To clean a web carrier belt, the belt is scanned by a sensor to determine the level of soiling and to show the location(s) of dirt on a matrix to display the belt condition. At least one cleaning system is controlled to remove the dirt from the belt, as shown on the matrix. The specification is an addition to DE19726897.8. The carrier belt is treated with at least one gas or liquid cleaning agent, under pressure. The intensity of the cleaning action is controlled by setting the pressure of the cleaning agent and/or its temperature. At least one of the cleaning agents is augmented selectively with an additive, according to the required cleaning intensity. The cleaning intensity is also set by the cleaning action duration, where a specific zone of the belt requires cleaning. The cleaning intensity is also adjusted by the time interval between successive cleaning actions at the same defined belt zone to be cleaned, with shorter time intervals increasing the cleaning intensity. The zone of the belt to be cleaned is subjected to an underpressure, with the pressure set according to the required cleaning intensity. An ultrasonic cleaning head is used to give the required cleaning intensity, across the whole belt width or in selected zones across its width. The volume of cleaning agent is deposited under control on the zones to be cleaned. The edges of the belt are cleaned more intensely than the surface of the belt between the edges. The cleaning intensity is increased at zones with heavy belt soiling, and decreased where the belt is only lightly soiled. An Independent claim is included for a web carrier belt cleaning apparatus with a jet assembly (5) which applies a cleaning action in controlled intensities according to the location(s) and weight(s) of soiling, as registered by the sensor along and/or across the belt (7). Preferred Features: The pressure of the delivered cleaning agent is set by the jet pump system. The jet (5) assembly is moved across the belt (7) movement direction, with an adjustable movement speed according to the required cleaning intensity. A suction zone (15), working with the jet (5), has a suction channel link (13) to a suction system, with a valve to set the suction power level. The jet unit (5) has at least two separate jets, which can be activated and shut down, to control the jet intensity. The sensor system determines the condition of the belt (7) by its permeability to water and/or air, or its water storage capability, while the belt is in operation.
