The energy absorber's stiffening elements(5) between the bumper support(2) and bumper casing(3) has free-standing front sides(6) pointing away from a rearside retaining structure(4) attached to the support. The stiffening elements in the longitudinal direction have a centre to centre spacing which corresponds to the standard dimensions of a human leg. The facing sides of the stiffening elements are constructed so that in the event of a collision with object with dimensions conforming to those of a human leg the stiffening elements deform independently of each other through energy absorption, and in the event of a collision with a larger object the stiffening elements come into contact with each other by their side faces through discontinuous increase in the rigidity of the energy absorber, preventing lateral deformations.
