A soft magnetic iron-nickel alloy, has a high nickel content and contains cerium and/or other rare earth elements. A novel soft magnetic iron-nickel alloy, with reduced coercive field strength, increased permeability and improved corrosion resistance, has the composition (by wt.) 65-85% nickel (Ni), one or more of 1-8% molybdenum (Mo), 1-15% copper (Cu), 0.5-6% chromium (Cr) and 1.5-15% tungsten (W), 0.003-0.05% total of cerium (Ce), lanthanum (La), praseodymium (Pr) and neodymium (Nd), balance iron (Fe) and impurities. An Independent claim is also included for melting of the above alloy by melting in an open arc furnace, followed by ladle and/or VOD treatment for deoxidation, desulfurization and degassing.
