The method involves deriving the duration of the next interval from wiper device characteristics determined by associating multiple wiper motor current measurements during the current interval to the time profile of the wiper period. The length of the next interval to be set is corrected to approximately the mean value of the length first determined for the next interval and the length set for the preceding interval.
