A metal halide lamp, having an external electrically conductive starter aid (11) providing an inhomogeneous electric field strength acting on one or both lamp electrodes, is new. A metal halide lamp has a tubular ceramic discharge vessel (1) containing two electrodes (2, 3) and has an external electrically conductive starter aid (11) which provides a non-uniform electric field strength acting on one or both of the electrodes. Preferred Features: The starter aid is a wire, metal strip or sintered starter strip.
