The hydrodynamic coupling comprises a pump wheel and a turbine wheel which form a toroidal working space. An inner housing is attached to the pump wheel and surrounds the turbine wheel. An outer housing (5) encloses all three. An inlet in the pump wheel and outlet in the inner housing allow the driving medium to circulate and the working space to be emptied. the outlet is fitted with a cleaning nozzle (6). Sensors collect data which is relevant to the operation of a machine connected to the coupling and converts this to signals. A processor lowers the degree of filling of the working space as required in response to these signals.
