The connecting element(6) which can couple the outer cup(4) and central follower is in the form of a spiral spring which in the non-loaded state does not engage with the tappet's outer cup. The outer edge portions of the spring comes into engagement with recesses(7) in the outer cup when the spring expands due to pressure of the control piston(5). Alternatively, the connecting element may be a leaf spring or disc spring.
