A house design for protection against disasters has a single storey structure built on a raft floating in a tank of water. The water can be drained out of the tank to retract the house into the ground with its flat roof flush with the ground and with access via roof hatches (3). In the retracted setting there are no exposed parts for storm damage. The house rises and falls on guides. If telescopic guides are used the house can even be raised above the ground to protect against floods. The floating condition provides protection against earthquakes.
