Edge protector is applied onto a brittle plate by (a) positioning the plate (1) with its top surface (1a) uppermost in a lower tool part (2); (b) placing an upper tool part (3a, b) on the lower tool part to delimit an open-top cavity in the plate edge region; (c) feeding cold setting casting material into the cavity; and (d) removing the plate with the resulting edge protector (10) from the tool. An Independent claim is also included for a plate with an edge protector applied by the above process. Preferred Features: A permanently elastic edge protector is formed using a low viscosity molding material or a impact resistant edge protector is formed using a low melting metal such as aluminum.
