Energy conversion apparatus for use in a thermal Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) process comprising an evaporator (2), turbine (3) and condenser in at least two cascade arrangements, and with the first stage condenser conducting heat to the second stage one, is such that a greater temperature differential is achieved between the cascade -inlet and -outlet. This increase in the temperature differential is achieved by providing a fluid regenerator (4) in each stage with the fluid being at low vapor pressure in the high temperature cycle and at a higher pressure in the low temperature cycle.
