A process for the preparation of aqueous copolymer dispersions by free-radical polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in aqueous solution is described, in which DOLLAR A (a) 10 to 90% by weight of at least one hydrophilic monomer A which has an N-vinyl group and its rate of polymerization at pH -Values has a maximum above 7, and DOLLAR A (b) 10 to 90% by weight of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated hydrophobic monomer B, the polymerization rate of which has a maximum at pH values below 7, DOLLAR A in the presence of a radical starter system be copolymerized in such a way that the pH value decreases by 2 to 5 pH value units in the course of the polymerization.
